Editorial Illustration Ideas and Concepts
Hannoch Piven

Creating ideas begins with playfulness in the words of Hannoch Piven. He recommends embracing a winding road and not to aim directly for the end result: by coincidentally using matches for a moustache of Suddam Hussain he also portrayed the ignition of war. You don't need faces for caricature. Personality can be represented more conceptually, like by using bread for the face of Karl Marx. Piven says when we play we are free, and in order to tell a story we shouldn't try to create art, we should simply look at what objects or methods can be used to convey a message. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e99DuPQ6j8
Chip Kidd

This image is a cover of a book by David Rakoff designed by Chip Kidd. Rakoff was getting sent on assignments that he didn't feel equipped to do and felt he was misrepresenting himself. Kidd’s design was intended to also misrepresent the book. Inspired by graffiti seen in the tube station he scribbled in red marker pen on the front of the book ‘fraud’. By using a red pen it feels like a teacher's note on homework and emphasises the debunking of the inside material.
Robert Rubbish

This illustration is titled The minotaur and the Sex Dwarf. It is from a series of works by artist Robert Rubbish called Spiritus Soho which features various cultures and characters from within Soho. The sex dwarf is from a song by Soft Cell and The minotaur is from Greek mythology and the guardian of the labyrinth. Rubbish’s interpretation of Soho is like a labyrinth and so he wanted to marry these characters together to represent different aspects of Soho culture.

Maira Kalman

This image was created by Maria Kalman for a redesign of The Elements of Style book. The image intends to portray dry british humour. It is whimsical in appearance using pastel hues and wobbly imperfect lines. She looks at the simplicity of a change in grammar and meaning, and this is reflected within her work.
